This International Day of the Girl, front doors across the country are getting decked out with equal signs for gender equality! Show your neighbors and friends that you believe in the potential of girls, and inspire others to do the same! Get creative — this is your space to make a statement. What does gender equality mean to you? What does unlocking doors mean for the girls in your life?
And don’t forget to share a photo of your front door on social media with the hashtag #GirlUnlocked!
If you need a head start, we’ve put together a toolkit with creative ideas for your front door project!
It includes fun activities that your family will love, too. And if you don’t have a front door to decorate, you can still make a bold statement for girls on social media with our digital front doors!
We have amazing corporate partners also participating in International Day of the Girl this year. Thanks to them, we’re hosting exciting virtual takeovers (where girls take on executive roles in major companies for the day) as well as a series of inspiring workshops for girls (led by female entrepreneurs and business leaders).
Keep an eye on our social media channels for updates from the girls participating!
International Day of the Girl is October 11. You can stand up for girls this year by joining Girl Unlocked!
Girl Unlocked is a global movement to help girls push through doors to unlock their full power and potential!
We’re going big this year. Because International Day of the Girl is more important than ever before.
COVID-19 has put vulnerable girls in even more danger. Millions of girls are out of school, and may never return. The pandemic is also increasing their risk for gender-based violence, trafficking and child marriage.
Every day that passes, more doors are closing for girls.
But you can show them they’re not alone. You can fight for their futures. Together, we can knock down the doors that are holding them back.
When a girl’s full potential is unlocked, everything changes.
Are you ready to get started?
1. Make a bold statement on your front door!
Girls all around the world are facing closed doors. And they’ve been stuck behind them for too long.
2. Get ready for Election Day!
Are you informed on legislative issues related to girls’ rights and gender equality? Do you know where your candidates stand on these issues?
We’ve created Unlock the Vote — an election resource center — to help you find this information. You can use it to learn more about how girls’ issues fit into this election. So when the time comes to submit your ballot, you’ll know you’re voting for girls.
3. Help protect girls from online bullying
Our latest State of the World’s Girls report came out on October 5! This year’s edition is called Freedom Online, and it unlocks critical information related to the harassment that girls are facing on social media.
We spoke to girls and young women and found some disturbing patterns in their experiences. And with COVID-19 moving more of our lives online, girls are at even higher risk for cyber abuse.
There is something you can do to protect girls. Plan published an open letter asking social media companies to step up. We wanted them to create stronger reporting mechanisms for online gender-based violence. You can take a stand by adding your name to this letter. Because girls deserve to be safe everywhere — including online.
5. Join us in thanking our partners who are supporting girls!
The Female Quotient will donate 20% of gross sales from all FQ Collection orders through June 1, 2021. And Boscov’s will donate 5% of a customer’s total purchase if “Plan International USA” is mentioned by name when making a purchase in-store or online during October 14-15, as part of Boscov’s annual Friends Helping Friends campaign.
Help us spread the word!

4. Make an immediate impact for girls!
You can celebrate International Day of the Girl with a gift that changes lives.
Why give to girls?
Because girls are still facing unfair challenges and closed doors. Because girls are being set back by COVID-19.
And because when a girl’s full potential is unlocked, there’s nothing she can’t do.
Girls aren’t helpless — they’re fighters. But they can’t knock down all the doors on their own. You can fight for girls today with a gift to Plan. Because a gift to Plan is a gift to girls.
